Seven steps to faster mobile broadband

With Three you can get 15GB of mobile broadband and Microsoft office 2010 for just £19.99 a month. But to get the most out of your mobile broadband deal it's important the device you use is fully optimised and you're aware of the simple tricks to get the most out of your connection.
1. Optimise your web browser
Optimising your web browser will instantly improve your online experience, and it only takes a click or two. Firstly try emptying your cache - the section of your computer's hard drive where temporary internet files are stored. This can speed up browsing and ensures the latest versions of web pages are displayed.
Another trick is using a pop-up blocker, which will prevent unwanted windows from appearing, and enabling the autofill function can save valuable seconds when you're filling in forms. Finally, a software update will upgrade your browser to the latest version available.

2. Boost your signal strength
Ideally, a mobile broadband dongle should be placed high in the building and close to a window - use a USB extension cable to find the optimum position. But if signal strength remains weak a separate antenna might be needed. Clip-on models, which pick up signals from various directions, attach to your laptop or PC and a desk or wall-mounted High Gain 3G directional antenna provides greater range, but must be aimed in the direction of the cellular tower. Finally, an outdoor antenna will improve reception in almost all circumstances.
3. Upgrade your mobile broadband package
If you're constantly at the upper limit of your data allowance it might be worth upgrading your mobile broadband package. Three offer up to 12GB of data allowance per month on a pay as you go plan, and 15GB on a pay monthly account - enough for plenty of music downloads, emails and video clips. The latest premium dongles also feature HSPA+ for browsing that's 40% faster than standard models, and rotating heads for optimal signal strength. Look out for package deals too, as you might be able to bag a new tablet with your high-speed dongle contract.

4. Avoid peak usage periods
The peak time for mobile broadband usage typically falls between 6pm - 11pm. If possible you should avoid heavy browsing or downloading during this period, as connection speeds suffer when everyone is online; you might also be disconnected more frequently due to increased strain on the network. Thankfully, there is software available that can help you avoid web congestion. Just add a download scheduler to your browser, and you'll be able to set downloads to occur at the time of your choosing.
5. Invest in Mi-Fi
Mi-Fi is mobile broadband with a wireless router twist. Small, portable, yet capable of granting online access for multiple devices, Mi-Fi connects to any Wi-Fi enabled laptop or tablet and shares its online connection over a short-range Wi-Fi link. Position the Mi-Fi router in a strong signal area and you'll be able to roam the house without losing your internet connection. And if you're out and about, the battery provides five hours of mobile use. Pop the Mi-Fi router in a charging dock when you return home and it will be ready for your next trip.

6. Avoid roaming charges
Using mobile broadband abroad can leave you with a hefty bill. Data roaming charges apply outside of the UK, so a large download - e.g. a movie - could cost you hundreds of pounds or more; automatic software updates can also add unwanted charges to your account. Some mobile broadband providers have set data roaming limits to ensure their customers don't rack up huge bills while overseas. However, if you want total peace of mind you can always check your data usage by logging into your mobile broadband account dashboard.
7. Disable automatic updates
Automatic software updates aren't just a nuisance when you're on holiday; they can also slow down your web browser and downloads, and use up valuable chunks of your monthly data allowance. If you're finding your connection speeds suspiciously sluggish, try turning off the automatic update function of your antivirus software. Most operating systems also download updates in the background, as do many tablet apps. Disable this function and you'll get an instant boost to your mobile broadband speed.
