Smart TV app streams movies on day of release
Bringing the cinema home
Curzon on Demand, Samsung's latest smart TV app, to be precise. This new movie streaming service not only offers a back catalogue of several hundred movies, it also makes it possible to watch a movie on the day of its cinema release without wandering the virtual backstreets of DodgyDownloadsVille.
The app comes from indie cinema chain Curzon. And, as you'll have guessed from the word 'indie', this isn't the app for you if your idea of 'challenging' cinema is sneaking into Battleship without a ticket.
Nope, what we're talking here are flicks for the thinking movie buff. Curzon shows a selection of arthouse and world movies at its London-based cinemas and on its existing online streaming service - and it's those films that will be available on the new TV app.
Both the smart TV app and the web-based service will benefit from selected movies being streamed on the day of their cinema release.
Curzon promises more than 250 films on the service, with more being added on a regular basis. There's an introductory price of £6 for day-of-release titles (such as this Friday's Le Havre); recent releases such as Girl With a Dragon Tattoo and Melancholia will cost £4; and films from Curzon's back catalogue are available for £2. Once you've paid, you can watch the film as many times as you like for seven days.
While Google Glass may not look much, the head-wearable computer could change the way we do a number of things in the future.
