Travis Katz, one-time head of MySpace EMEA, serial entrepreneur and the man behind social travel app and website Gogobot, gives us his own personal low-down on the big tech and gadget hits and misses of the week.

Apple versus Samsung trial - what IS going on?

Travis says:
"Finally, the legal system gains some sense on this matter. I've said it before and I'll say it again: these suits are doing no one any favors, least of all the reputations of these companies.

We all love Apple, and we all tolerate Samsung, and it's time to put an end to squabbling over who was able to re-purpose old ideas first. I think, however, we can all agree that we'd rather them throw money at shiny new toys for us rather than attorneys. Can anyone say "magical"?

had such a strong social media pull. And Danny Boyle's #savethesurprise hashtag will surely remain one of our favourites for years to come. And let's just hope that daft Tory twit MP Aiden Burley has learnt his lesson come Rio 2016!Travis says:"Dearly beloved, we've gathered here to say our goodbyes to the Twitterlympics. This may not have been the funeral we were all hoping for; Twitter still lives and is, apparently, setting Olympic records. In four years, we expect to see events like Synchronized Tumblring and the Hipster Horse joining the games".topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Twitter.com)MSN Tech SpertAre maps the next big battleground between Google, Apple and Microsoft?Apple's new iOS 6 mobile operating system due later this year will include Apple's own 3D-ready mapping app, as will Microsoft/Nokia's own mobile mapping app when it arrives at some point soon.Travis says:"I believe that after a few acquisitions, Google now holds patents on all mapping technologies, electronic or otherwise. Apple, however, has patented the technology to display images or symbols on any device with a shiny glass screen. Sounds messy. The truth is that competition is always good for consumers. Google maps for mobile revolutionized the way we get around. Some stiff competition creates incentives for more innovation." topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©MSN)Our weekly update on iPhone 5 rumours! Yay!Our weekly update on iPhone 5 rumours! Yay!Three different reports claimed that the new iPhone 5 will have a new and different motherboard from past models, with a battery connector with five pins (instead of four) as well as the latest super-fast 4G LTE connectivity tech. Let's wait and see what the (rumoured) 12 September Apple iPhone 5 press event has to offer, eh... Travis says: "iPhone 5 rumour mills are like the real estate market: full of speculators waiting for the bubble to burst. In this case, however, no one really wins anything other than the title of "I told you so". That said, I can't help but get excited over any tidbit of information about a new gadget, especially one with so much secrecy surrounding it. This is something akin to surreptitiously shaking Christmas presents the week before the holidays. We all want something different, and I know I'm going straight for the biggest box."  topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Apple)Don’t rely on satnavs when up a mountain!Don't rely on satnavs when up a mountain!Chief inspector Andrew Todd, co-ordinator of mountain rescue in Grampian, said: "I have been involved in mountain rescue for nearly 20 years and, whilst technology can and does play an important part in raising the alarm or assisting navigation, it appears we may be about to witness a marked increase in the complete reliance of smartphone apps to navigate some of the UK's highest mountains."Travis says:"Are we really surprised when people do silly people things? If you give a mouse some cheese, he'll go backpacking in dangerous conditions without proper navigation equipment and with no prior experience. That's how that goes, right? It's human nature. Make something accessible and more people are going to want to access it. The solution here is better education, not warning people against using smartphones as navigation tools. That's akin to the far right's stance on sex education. Smartphones aren't the reason hikers are hiking 'unprotected'."topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©TomTom)Superfast Broadband Britain! – Or is it?Superfast Broadband Britain! - Or is it?UK internet service providers have now managed to boost our average home broadband speed to 9 megabits per second (Mbit/s), up from 3.6Mbit/s recorded in November 2008. It all sounds very positive, but are we really getting the broadband speeds we are paying for?Travis says:"And the people of the UK rejoiced! Until they discovered that despite its relative size and population density, the entirety of the western world is being left in the dust by countries like Japan in terms of broadband speed and access. Here's to hoping Google Fiber makes its way to the UK at some point. Between its starting city in Missouri and its recent Motorola layoffs, I wouldn't hold my breath; then again, I hear fiber optics travel faster in a vacuum."topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Virgin Media)Do you ever send postcards when on hols?Do you ever send postcards when on hols?A new piece of market research by One Poll suggests that only one in six Brits now sends a postcard while they are away on their annual hols. Plus, somewhat amazingly, 45% of Brits have apparently never ever sent a postcard to loved ones while they are away living it up on the beach somewhere hot and sunny! Facebook and email all the way, apparently.Travis says:"Travel postcards dead? Not quite, I think. As the CEO of Gogobot, I'm obviously somewhat biased on the matter, however. I mean, I Facebooked a postcard of my dinner just last night. Via my iPhone, even. In fact, I encourage the postman to read what I wrote about this restaurant. He may enjoy it. Postcards dead? Nah. They were just waiting on a more intelligent design." topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Norfolk Museum)UK Web pirate jailed for 4 yearsUK Web pirate jailed for 4 years38-year-old Anton Vickerman's surfthechannel.com attracted 400,000 visitors a day at its height and, according to movie industry flacks, cost the film industry tens of millions of pounds. Vickerman had actually tried to sell the site for a hefty £255,000 back in 2008. Travis says: "Avast, ye matey. Sorry, I think it's time we stopped calling these people "pirates". Conjuring up ridiculous notions of a swashbuckler sailing the high seas does nothing to help waningpublic opinion of content providers. We all know theft is wrong, but it's time for the industry to step up and start providing paid, on demand media in a way that is consumer friendly (e.g. don't expire my paid movie rental while I am still watching the film, Apple). Times are changing and these "pirates" are only a symptom of a much larger issue." topThis field has been disabled for Gallery V2Travis Katz, myspace, travis katz myspace, google, samsung vs apple, samsung patents, motorolaTravis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)Travis Katz on the week's biggest tech stories.(©Piratebay)
