Don't you mean 130 years ago?
Teleprinter Operators used many abbreviations and symbols long before Computers or cellphones came along. Teleprinter art was neat too. (check out )
There were also other abbreviations like LO= "Hello" in morse code long before that.
An article on Wikipedia puts "Emoticons" back as far as 1881.

30 year anniversary of Smiley face, absolute rubbish. I have a Celtic Potin coin circa 80BC with a smiley face on one side over 2000 years old!
