While the yearly Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas every January is where the big brands show off their new kit for the following year, Japan's annual CEATEC event is where true geeks flock to, in order to get a longer-term view of where our tech and gadgets are heading over the next five to ten years and beyond.

As you would expect from a Japanese tech event, CEATEC never disappoints when it comes to the latest in quirky humanoid robots and sci-fi style homes of the future. Yet there are also loads of cool demos of near-future technologies that will definitely impact the way we play, watch TV, use computers and interact with our smartphones and tablets over the coming years too.

Here are the top ten moments from CEATEC 2011 that point towards where consumer tech is heading over the next decade and beyond...

I find the exoskeleton most interesting. Am I the only one who reckons that the military would be mostly interested in this? I mean it augments physical strength and possible protection...  Robosoldier?

As for the breathaliser phone I doubt anyone will seriously pay attention to it when it tells them they`re over the limit. It would also need to be recognised by the country`s Police as well, "But my breathaliser phone says i`m not over the limit, Officer!"

Interesting stuff anyway.

Just another bit of fun :)   in answer to 'zero drinking tolerance'   anyone taking certain cough or cold medicines or a simple chocolate liqure could end up arrested...   IT'S NOT ILEGAL TO DRINK AND DRIVE ..  ITS ILEGAL TO DRINK TOO MUCH ... DRINK SENSIBLY :)

I hope the phone that acts as a breathalyser rings the police and pinpoints the whereabouts of the drunken owner if he attempts to drive

eehh! really not sure about why this idea. Neil i agree with you on this one. anything that will make people think they can be 'smart' with drink driving should really be discouraged.

That said, for the sake of technology, i think it can easily be transferred into other positive things e.g. ability to turn the phone into an inhaler for asthmatics amongst others.

the phone that can be turned into a breathalyser is a really bad idea you will get peo[ple competing to see who has the highest alcohol level then drive this was tried in the 80's with machines on the wall not a good idea best app for a phone is any alcohol then DON'T DRIVE ZERO TOLERANCE IS THE ONLY WAY SCRAP THE IDEA NOW

The phone is the one gadget that does it all, no need for a watch, pen or cash, but you can still carry it if you want to.
