FAQ: My Messenger contacts are missing

What to do if contacts are missing from your Messenger contacts list.

If one or more contacts are missing from your contact list, the contents of your contacts folder may be damaged or the contact may not have used their account for a specified period.

To resolve this issue, try the following in the order that they're presented:

It may sound like a scary proposition but we're going to delete the contents of your contacts (friends) folder.

If your contact list is empty or incomplete after you update Windows Live Messenger, the cached contact list may not have updated correctly.

Note: You must set the folder options and layout on your computer correctly before you can view and delete the contents of your Contacts folder.

Verify folder options and layout

Start Windows Explorer.

In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type explorer in the Run box, and then press ENTER.


In Windows Vista, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type explorer, and then press ENTER. Under Programs, click Windows Explorer.
  

Set the folder options

In Windows XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

In Windows Vista, on the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.

Click the View tab.

In the Advanced Settings list, select Show hidden files and folders, make sure that Hide extensions for known file types is not selected, and then click OK.
  

Set the folder layout

In Windows XP, on the View menu, point to Explorer Bar, and then make sure that Folders is checked.

In Windows Vista, on the Organize menu, point to Layout, and then make sure that Navigation Pane is selected.

To delete your Contacts folder

Start Windows Explorer.

In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type explorer in the Run box, and then press ENTER.

In Windows Vista, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type explorer, and then press ENTER. Under Programs, click Windows Explorer.
  

In Windows XP, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows logon name\Contacts\Your Messenger e-mail address folder, and then delete all the files that are in the folder.


In Windows Vista, navigate to the C:\Users\Your Windows logon name\Contacts\Your Messenger e-mail address folder, and then delete all the files that are in the folder.

Delete the contents of the Windows Live Contacts folder.

In Windows XP, navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows logon name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Your Messenger e-mail address folder, and then delete all the files that are in the folder.


In Windows Vista, navigate to the C:\Users\Your Windows logon name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\Your Messenger e-mail address folder, and then delete all the files that are in the folder.


Close Windows Explorer and try to sign in to Messenger again.

If contacts are still missing from your contact list, go to the next step.

Please note: Be careful not to delete the Contacts folder itself. Doing so will delete all of your contacts.
