The bright white model adds to Nokia's growing Lumia palette. The white Lumia 800 is the first of its kind to sport a high gloss finish and the design is sure to turn some heads.

The finish applied to all Nokia Lumia 800's is achieved through the manufacturing of the Lumia's unibody. The phones crisp colours aren't simply added as a top-coat, the pigment is stirred into the polycarbonate liquid to make a mould.

In an interview with the Conversations by Nokia website, Colour and material designer Tiina Aarras says this of the new white colour: "The story of the Nokia Lumia is one of reduction and purity. White is the ultimate colour of reduction. It's also perfect for emphasising the black polished screen. If you stand a white Lumia 800 on a table the body almost disappears, and the black screen seems to lift up and float."

Grace Boicel, Head of Smart Devices Colours Materials and Design at Nokia Design: "We had to do a lot of testing looking at the reaction of the white pigments to light. It's very hard to get a pure white that doesn't look yellow."

Nokia Lumia 800 specs

The Nokia Lumia 800 incorporates the latest incarnation of Windows Phone (7.5), one-touch social network access, easy grouping of contacts, integrated communication threads and Internet Explorer 9.

It features a 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack curved display blending seamlessly into the reduced body design, and a 1.4 GHz processor with hardware acceleration and a graphics processor.

The Lumia 800 contains an instant-share camera experience based on leading Carl Zeiss optics, HD video playback, 16GB of internal user memory and free SkyDrive storage for storing images and music.

Exclusive Nokia apps

Lumia smartphones include signature Nokia experiences optimized for Windows Phone, including Nokia Drive, which delivers a full-fledged personal navigation device (PND) with free, turn-by-turn navigation and dedicated in-car-user-interface; and Nokia Music introducing MixRadio, a free mobile music-streaming application that delivers hundreds of channels of locally-relevant music. Windows Marketplace also gives Lumia users more than 55000 apps to choose from.

"Since we began selling it late last year, the Nokia Lumia 800 has received rave reviews around the world," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President of Product Marketing, Nokia. "Now in white, the Lumia 800 brings with it an even more premium look and feel with its gloss finish, but packed with power and performance underneath its sleek body."

Nokia also recently announced a magenta (pink) edition of the Lumia 800.

@ bob hopps

Have you tried to update? There have been 1-2 software updates for the battery by Nokia . Otherwise you just had a bad apple and you should try to change it. Smartphone battery is normally a day with medium-heavy usage. If you get anything less it's probably something wrong with the specific battery in your mobile.

Does anyone really care what colour they are as they spend most of their life out of sight.

What is more important is the improper use by their owners.

Why has it been necessary to make their use while driving, illegal in the UK?

I fly by passenger airlines twice every month. On every flight an announcement from the crew reminds passengers that they must not activate their phones until they have left the ´plane. Wherever I am sitting there is usually someone in sight ignoring the warning.

On my local ´busses there are posters asking passengers not to use their mobiles, again ignored. I am amused to see the looks of frustration on the faces of these people when they board the new vehicles coming into service with mesh screens on the windows that the signals cannot penetrate

I hope the white version comes with a better battery life than ny black model!! I have had the 800 since a day after launch and had I realised how poor and in my opinion not fit for purpose it is I would have steered clear.
