Can HTC beat the iPhone 5?
There's a mind-boggling array of different smartphones on the market at any given time and picking one for your next purchase can be tricky.
With the latest addition to the Apple family (iPhone 5) going on sale we wonder if there's a single smartphone out there capable of denting Apple's empire. Or will this instead take the combined might of a rival ecosystem to topple the Californian titans?
Hot off the back of HTC unveiling the next phone(s) in their Windows Phone collection we cast an eye over the current crop of Windows Phones. Both Windows Phone 7 and 8 devices offer instant access to mail, messaging, integration with Xbox Live and a raft of other features too. And whilst they're undeniably a potent bunch more than capable of doing all the things a smartphone is expected to do, they're also wonderfully simple to use. What's more, with money tight for many of us, search out one of the older models shown here and you should be able to bag a bargain at the same time.

Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Note 2 (when released) - all of them Apple want to have banned in America.... Why? Because they are better than the iPhone 5.
The difference this time for Microsoft is that the big mobile phone producers, HTC, Samsung and Nokia have announced some beautiful phones to support Windows Phone. Windows Phone 7 received moderate support, cumilating in some excellent handsets such the HTC Titan and the Nokia Lumia 800. This time round we already have 3 excellent phones from the word go, and they look fantastic. Anyone trialling Windows 8 prebuild on a tablet will already have a good idea of how these phones will work, and most people I know who have actually given Windows Phone 7 a go are very happy with the interface that is used.
Unfortunately for Apple, the iPhone 5 is pretty much the same as before, just a few hardware tweaks and a bigger screen. It reminds me of the 80s when there were many different versions of the Apple avaiable, all being pretty much the same thing. I would have hoped Apple would have tried not to fall into the same rut again, but they are starting to show signs of it.
I personally won't be buying an iPhone 5 as I already have a Samsung Activ S on pre-order, another Windows 8 phone. I like the productivity ability and simplicity of the Windows phones; they definitely are for true mobile phone aficionados. They are not just phones for people who like apps to make farting sounds when someone walks past!!
