While the likes of Apple, Samsung and Sony slug it out to become smartphone heavyweight champion of the world, one company is taking a different route. Doro has made its name by turning its back on the never-ending race to pack phones with thousands of features, focusing on simplicity instead.
So far, its mobiles have been big-buttoned feature phones, but it's now launched its first ever smartphone. The PhoneEasy 740 has features such as a web browser, social networking functions and an app store, but it's a device even your technophobic nan can use. We went along to the product's launch to take a look.

Good, I like simple to use phones. I dont want them to sing, dance and make the tea - just take calls and send messages and accept pictures if someone sends me one. That's it! Sorted.

at last a phone that people with disabilities can use, instead of these tiny buttons and so called touch screens and scrolling. thanks, about time

£300 ?????. Are Doro taking the p*ss or what ?. I'm still using an old Sony Ericsson I had 4 years ago. Don't use the camera, don't use the tuner,don't use the bluetooth . I plays a tune when someone rings, It plays a little tune when I get a text....thats it,job done ! Really can't understand why muppets need all the pointless gizmo's on their mobile phones. The cameras are always ****e, haven't seen a decent photo taken with one yet. The sound quality is rather dubious at best. If you've got fingers like Bulls **** like me then the buttons are useless. My Mum got her first mobile phone last year, it cost £10:99 from Tesco. It does everything she wants, I might get one myself when mine packs up.

im all for it (so i expect the thumbs down ) but im ecentric anyhow ...my phone is an old blue nokia...my tv is and old panasonic.....my pc is an old e ...i love crap ...so this appeals to me simple things ....iv wrote it down im tempted ... ps iv still got 400 cassettes vhs in my hse ...yes im a sad bastard he he xx

Too many people want to have their cake and eat it. My father is 72 and has all his wits about him; but unfortunately his mobility, eyesight and hearing is deteriorating. He needs a Doro-like phone, and I was going to get him the 615 just because it has 3G and a flash camera as he sees my mum taking photos of the grandkids. My relunctance was that he also shows hints of wishing he had a smartphone when he sees us and even his mates using the benefits of them. Before now there was no android out there that could be both for him; and I would gladly pay a premium for him to fulfil a small desire at his old age while having the necessary practicalities for his age-related conditions. He might not have been able to afford it himself, so most elderly folk couldn't; but the bottom line is, it's about whether you WANT it or NEED it. A smartphone is not a prime need for someone who needs an accessibility phone; you can get the latter for a £100 sim free which is pretty darn good for a 3G phone; or even less for a 2G phone. If you WANT something that satisfies pleasure AND practicality, you have to be willing to pay for it. Most modern smartphones don't even have the latter practicality yet cost more. I'm sure they will bring out the phone on contract to make the cost more bearable.

Like the concept, however make it fully touch - touch is much more natural than pressing a number several times to get a letter. Also get the cost down, not value for money.
