Apple has pioneered easy-to-learn fully featured music creation apps with its GarageBand software on Mac laptops over the last few years. The latest version of GarageBand (£2.99) for iPhone contains more choices of virtual instruments for mobile producers to play around with than ever before.

GarageBand turns your iPhone into a pretty powerful mobile recording studio, so you can combine pianos, guitars, drums, basses and more, plus use your phone's built-in microphone to capture vocals or other instruments to add into the mix. Tunes can be shared via SoundCloud, Facebook or YouTube.

Also try:
SoundCloud for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone or BlackBerry (free) to capture and share your tunes on the go
PocketBand Uloops Lite for Android (free)
Single Cell Software's (free) Caustic 2 Music App for Android
