10 new HD channels coming 2014

The BBC will be launching five new HD TV channels in the UK in 2014, the corporation has confirmed.

The new channels will include HD versions of BBC News, BBC Three, BBC Four, and kids' channels CBeebies and CBBC.

The channels will join BBC One HD and BBC Two HD, which are already available, and mean that the BBC will have gone completely High-Def.

Up to 10 new HD channels could launch in 2014 because of the extra bandwidth, although details of what the other five channels could be are still yet unknown.

The move from analogue to digital TV, successfully completed at the end of 2012, cleared two frequency bands for new uses. Following consultation, Ofcom decided that one of these bands should be made available for additional DTT capacity on an interim basis, as originally proposed. The other was recently auctioned for 4G mobile services.

The new HD channels from the corporation won't just be available for Freeview HD customers, they will also be available for free to cable and satellite services, including Virgin Media, Sky and Freesat.

Viewers will need a HD-compatible receiver in order to access the new services. At the moment about 20 per cent of households already have such a device to watch existing HD channels on the platform.

Update:The BBC has further revealed its plans when it comes to the channels and digital terrestrial television allocation. Rather than bid for five of the 10 new HD channels as previously thought, it will only need two.

The HD versions of BBC Three and CBBC will share existing capacity. BBC Four and CBeebies will take up one of the new channels, as they are not on air at the same time. BBC News will take another.
