Google Nexus 7 tablet announced
Google has announced a seven-inch tablet computer that costs less than half the price of an entry-level iPad.
The Google Nexus 7 was unveiled at the company's I/O conference in San Francisco earlier this evening.
It is a seven-inch tablet made by Asus powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip. It also includes a 12-core graphics chip and a 1280x800 resolution display.
The Nexus 7 goes on sale in the UK in mid-July. A model with 8GB of storage will be available for £159, while a 16GB will go on sale for £199. Both models can be pre-ordered now from the Google Play Store.
Also announced at Google's keynote was the Nexus Q - a spherical Android computer that is designed to be placed in your living room.
The Nexus Q plugs into your TV and sound system and can be controlled via an Android device. It streams audio or video content direct from the Google Play Store.
Google also announced the latest version of its mobile operating system. Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) has a number of incremental updates on the existing 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version.
Key additions include faster, smoother animations, added notification functionality and a completely rebuilt search feature. A core part of the latter is Google Now, which makes searches without the user even needing to ask for them, based on their previous searches.
Finally, Google showed off its Google Glass product - a prototype device that integrates a camera, processor and array of sensors into a lightweight set of glasses. The device makes it possible to seamlessly take photos and video, as well as overlaying information onto your surroundings.
