Moving on to Windows 8, Balmer stressed that it was designed "in a forward-looking way" and operates around the central philosophy that "people want to be mobile, without compromising the productivity PCs are known for."

He brought up a bet that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Paul Allen made at the firm's founding - "hardware and software, pushing each other" - and spoke about previous hardware ventures the firm had embarked on, such as the Xbox, Kinect and webcams. Then, finally, a video to introduce it - showing metal warping in the air above a desert to reveal the word "Surface".
